Rasputin

This entry is part 5 of 14 in the series Evil Dudes In History

Continuing the “Evil Men In History” series Joe, Kevin, and Toren check out Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin. Just how evil was this Russian that was so hard to kill it took stabbing, poisoning, shooting, drowning and then burning to make him completely stop moving? The answer may surprise y… oh who knows, really? But we’ll take our best barely-educated guesses!

  1. Keen episode. Rasputin also features heavily in the Australian horror film HARLEQUIN (1980), in which Robert Powell plays a mysterious magician who heals a senator’s son and becomes massively influential in Australian politics…

btw- Ultimate Colossus was far from boring for me, because he was Gay and in a relationship with Northstar!

  2. Rasputin, The Mad Monk by Hammer Films, with Christopher Lee as Rasputin! It’s an ok movie, I found it to be a bit boring, but Christopher Lee’s acting was great! He’s not depicted as malicious, but rather as a crazy guy, which was amusing.

    1. I watched the 66 version too – I disagree that he’s not portrayed as malicious. He’s very much the villain of the piece, deliberately making people sick so he can heal them, manipulating them for the thrill of it and being very very vindictive.

Good show, if a bit messy and all over the place. Lee is great as always though.

Oh, and his magic powers are real, not least the mesmerising.

  3. Great ep 30 minutes in guys. We have our own Mad Monk in Australia – it’s the nickname of the Leader of the Opposition.

  4. Rasputin appears as a sorcerer in the SNK videogame series World Heroes using various mystic abilities such as fireballs, iceballs and turning into stone when he blocks.
The series also includes a number of other characters based on historical figures, such as Joan of Arc, Hattori Hanzo and… Hulk Hogan.

  5. Greetings Gentlemen!

Thank you for making the Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout from the North Coast Brewing Co. that much more enjoyable.

    Cheers!

  6. Was just listening to this again today and it occurred to me that there’s a very Rasputin-like character in an Australian tv black comedy series called Laid (http://m.imdb.com/title/tt1695583/), which is really quite funny. There’s a guy in it who looks like he’s just crawled out of a bin with awful hair and wispy gross beard, etc, and he cures people of their ailments with his penis, ie any woman he has sex with is cured of anything. I had no idea he was another Rasputin until I listened again today and I don’t even know if it’s deliberate. Worth looking up the show if you can get it; it’s very Aussie. :o)

  7. More heavy metal, and some woo-woo following:

The progressive heavy metal band Mastodon released a concept album called Crack the Skye; the album is about a man who astral projects (or some nonsense) and his mind becomes severed from his body (he flew too close to the sun). In track 4 friendly spirits have found him and try to guide him back to his body and time. To do this they enlist the help of a murdered and dying Rasputin who agrees to help,

  8. I somehow submitted the previous post using the keyboard before I was ready…

More heavy metal, and some woo-woo following:

The progressive heavy metal band Mastodon released a concept album called Crack the Skye; the album is about a man who astral projects (or some nonsense) and his mind becomes severed from his body (he flew too close to the sun). In the track The Czar friendly spirits have found him and try to guide him back to his body and time period. To do this they enlist the help of a murdered and dying Rasputin who agrees to help. Rasputin guides the man back to his body, but along the way they run into the Devil who tries to steal their souls.

Even if you’re not a fan of heavy metal, you’ll probably enjoy this album.

  9. Liking the Big Lebowski references in this episode. Probably the least evil guy in this series though, in my opinion.
