The papal bull of 1493, the Inter Caetera, was the foundation for the colonization of the New World by Spain – it separated the world into two regions, one for Spain and one for Portugal, the two Catholic states that were so aggressively exploring and so on.
It delineated the world along a line of latitude (broadly speaking) in the Atlantic. Everything west of the line was for Spain, everything east was for Portugal. The Portuguese therefore went east, establishing trading routes around Africa into the East Indies, while Spain aggressively colonized Mexico and Central and South America. The line cut through South America, though, leaving a portion in Portuguese dominion, which is why Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese.
